On September, 08th 2007, the funeral for Luciano Pavarotti was held at Modena 's 12th century cathedral. He died at his home on September 06th of kidney failure surrounded by his loved ones.
Among the celebrities who attended, U2 frontman Bono was applauded upon arrival, and was quoted to say, a great volcano of a man who sang fire but spilled over with love of life in all its complexity, a great and generous friend".
Soprano Monserrat Caballe reportedly sent a wreath saying, "Your memory will be with me throughout eternity"
Pavarotti, 71, was in the hospital recovering from an infection thought to be pneumonia last August 14, and last year he had a tumor removed from his pancreas in New Yo rk , following which he under went five treatments of chemotherapy.
Pavarotti was best known for his performances with the 'Three Tenors' and 'Pavarotti & Friends'.
His first operatic debut was on April 29, 1961, and his last performance was in New York , in March 2004, in an opera as the painter Mario Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini's 'Tosca' at the New York Metropolitan Opera.
In Modena, where his funeral ceremony took place as an international event, reportedly by several celebrities, and sadly mourned by over fifty thousand music lovers surrounding the globe.
He was a true icon in Opera, and will be sadly missed.
